The Lighthouse

Michigan, a sunny summer day

On the beach in a small town called Silver Lake

A lighthouse towers over the scene

Tall, strong, brick, lean.

The stairs were wiry, the kind that hurt my bare feet

Out of breath, we stopped at the landing to read

“Built in 1874, Little Sable Point Lighthouse is 107 feet tall.”

The interior was a spiral of steps, cramped, dark, and small

Finally! The observation deck, made of cold concrete

I leaned into the railing, letting my hair dance in the breeze

The sun sparkled and glistened, warming the water for miles

I watched as the waves came crashing in and heard the laughter of a child

Sand lingered in between my painted toes

People wandered and waded into the water below

Pigeons poked at picnic crumbs on a blanket left vacant

Blue, red, green, and yellow umbrellas marked meeting places

The smell of suntan lotion, the sun warming my tanned skin

The purple smiley face sticker upon exiting, thanking me for visiting

Jogging back to our palm tree towels, I turned to look back

The lighthouse winked at me, summing up my summer in one glance
