Surfing!!!

Posted on: November 9, 2011

Today was an interesting day.  As usual, it felt pretty long.  My friend had class from 9am til noon so I had a few hours to myself.  I went for a run in Ala Moana Park.  I found a shady spot under a tree and did some abs and ran up and down stairs to the beach! It was an awesome setting for a workout. After that, I showered and headed to the mall for an acai bowl at Jamba Juice.  I also got a manicure and pedicure which was long overdue!  It was only my 3rd pedicure ever! I am always hesitant to get them because my feet are so ticklish! I chose a color I owned to hopefully make touch ups easy.  It’s a periwinkle color. I was so relaxed while getting my nails done.  It was nice.  My fingers and toes look WAY better right now than when I paint them myself!  There are only 2 coats on my toes as opposed to the usual 6 when I do it myself. My friend met me at the mall and we headed home for lunch.  We hit the beach around 3pm.  We went to the beach in Waikiki.  I wanted to surf, but there weren’t too many waves so I rented a paddle board and he brought his body board so he could show me what to do.  I got the hang of paddling quickly when the water was calm. This was not enough, though!  My friend wanted me to try to catch some waves on the paddle board.  The things about a paddle board is that it has a paddle.  It was difficult for me to use it and when I fell off, I had to make sure I didn’t let go of it. When trying to catch waves, I stayed on my knees on the board because it was easier to balance.  I think I will have a few bruises tomorrow from hitting myself with the paddle when I wiped out. I caught one good wave on the paddle board and when I did, I didn’t know what to do with the paddle!!  After that, I decided to ditch the paddle altogether and use the board like a surfboard.  I have never surfed before either, but I’ve always wanted to try.  I don’t have too much upper body strength, but I figured using my arms to paddle would be easier than actually carrying a paddle.  I was right!  I missed 2 waves at first, but the 3rd one I caught! I stood up and rode it pretty close to shore! It was really fun!  We went in after that because my friend had to get to soccer practice.  I hope we can go surfing again with an actual surfboard before I leave! I really enjoyed it. I just hung out during soccer practice.  I was too tired to play! My legs feel like jello from kneeling on the paddle board and my run this morning.  I’ve been up talking with my friend’s roommate for a while.  She’s really cool.  We made pizza and had wine.  We forgot to get a corker when we bought the bottle of wine!  We googled ways to open a bottle of wine without using a wine bottle opener. Here is the link that we tried to follow: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/28/open-wine-without-a-corksrew_n_815394.html  The shoe idea was really our only option.  It didn’t work out too well so I ran to the ABC store on the corner and picked up the proper utensils.   Tomorrow morning we might head back to Pearl Harbor and check out the Missouri.  His roommate said she would take me on a hike tomorrow afternoon while my friend is in class.  I haven’t done any hiking yet, so I think that could be fun!  We planned out that whole schedule for the week, but haven’t really been following it.  I guess we’re on “Hawaii time.”
