Milwaukee Weekend

Posted on: July 22, 2013

My boyfriend and I went up to Milwaukee this weekend to celebrate his birthday. It is on Wednesday (7/24) and this weekend is Tomapalooza so we decided to celebrate the weekend before his actual birthday. We had plans to go up on Saturday, but he wanted to go on Friday so that’s what we did. We had dinner with my parents Friday night and then left for Milwaukee. We got in around 9:30. Kit got us a room at the Aloft Hotel. It was pretty nice! The decorations in the room were modern/ art deco/ had weird angles. The lobby area was cool. They had a fireplace with outdoor seating and a band playing when we got there. We got settled in our room then headed out on the town! Our first stop was Rosie’s on Water Street. They have a wristband deal for birthdays where the person gets to drink for free! We didn’t do that, but saw a few people who were celebrating birthdays. That’s a cool idea, but I can see how it could get out of hand. We were talking with a bartender and he gave Kit a free drink when we mentioned that we were celebrating his birthday. Rosie’s was nice, but it was pretty hot so we moved on to McGillyCuddy’s. That place was awesome. They had 2 floors with a patio and outdoor seating. We decided to sit upstairs where it was quieter. The patio was right on the water so things were getting a little rowdy out there! It was nice to be somewhere tucked away from the commotion and talk. We decided to head back to the hotel after that. We only had one drink there, but man were they strong! We stopped at the hotel bar for 1 more before we went upstairs and ended up staying for a while. We met a few sets of couples who were enjoyable to talk to. The 3rd pair who sat down next to us kept buying shots! They were there for a wedding. It was fun to meet new people. Saturday morning was a bit rough. We got to our other hotel, the Hyatt, just before noon and luckily we were able to check in early. We met my friend Christine and her boyfriend for lunch at Cafe Benelux. It was great to see them and hang out! They are both teachers in Milwaukee. I’m glad they recommended that place because we got to see the other side of town. The restaurant was busy so we had to wait a while, but it was worth it. We sat upstairs in the shade. They have a bunch of different kinds of Bloody Mary’s. I don’t like those too much, but after trying these, I could see how the traditional ones would be good! These had pepper infused vodka, garlic infused vodka, and practically a salad on top with green beans, olives, shrimp, anything you can think of! It was crazy. They put Tabasco and all sorts of crazy stuff in them. I had a ham and cheese croissant with breakfast potatoes. It was excellent. My only complaint is slow service, but they were pretty busy. That area of Milwaukee was so cool. There was a farmer’s market and a bunch of other restaurants and shops right there. Parking was only $3 for 2 hours! We took a quick nap after that then got ready and headed out to the Summerfest grounds for Festa Italiana! It was about a mile and a half away, but we decided to walk along the lake front. We passed Cathedral Square where a craft beer festival was being held. I seriously considered getting tickets to it, but I’m glad I didn’t because it didn’t look too exciting! Festa Italiana was a lot of fun. We had fried eggplant with breaded mushrooms and cauliflower. I sampled some wine and we walked around and saw ‘Italian Idol,’ a karokee contest. There were people selling flavored olive oil and crushed up olives and things. We watched Matt Nathanson perform, shared an Italian beef sandwich, and stuck around to see a few songs by the Plain White T’s. We left around 10 and decided to stop at the Pfister to catch the fireworks from the 23rd floor. We stayed at the Pfister for my birthday and really liked it. I tried to get us a room there, but it was sold out for Saturday night. We saw in the elevator that there were 2 weddings there! It was awesome to see the Festa Italiana fireworks from up there. Good idea, Kit. The drinks were pretty expensive, though. I had a blood orange concoction that cost about $12 and was not enjoyable. When we left, we stopped at Bar 333 in our hotel for one more. We told the bar tender that I did not enjoy any of the drinks I had that night (except the wine) and asked him for something good! I think I got a pomegranate martini. It was really good. We stayed for about an hour and a half chatting up the bar tenders. They were so nice. They ended up charging us only $6! They mumbled something about Kit’s birthday and my bad drinks, but they definitely should have charged us more. I left a nice tip. I was excited when we got back to the room because there was still time to fill out our breakfast order and get it for the next morning! I checked the box for 8:30 – 9 a.m. delivery and was not prepared when they came at 8:25! Usually we are up by then, but we must have been very tired! The man who delivered the food said he was very sorry for waking me up! That was embarrassing. Breakfast was good, though! I got eggs benedict. We watched a little golf in the morning then headed home. Here are a few pictures!
