Rome day 1!

Posted on: May 31, 2014

Today was out first day in Rome! We landed around 3:00 local time. The flight was not bad at all. I slept for most of it! I had baked mostaccoli for dinner along with free wine, slept and then had a roll and yogurt for breakfast! I read some of the Italy books friends have given me after that until we landed. It was very cool to see the land and the water from my window! When we were 6 miles away from our destination, we were still over water! Crazy! Our hotel is very nice but a bit cramped. The elevator only fits about 3 people and we are sleeping in twin beds. I tried to learn Italian on the car ride from airport to hotel, but all I really got down was mi scusi and buena Serra, excuse me and good evening. After freshening up a bit in the hotel, we headed out for dinner. The manager recommended Vitti, a short walking distance with good Italian food and where we could sit outside. It was very nice! We ordered food and wine in English but then decided we should try to speak Italian. I had a prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich. It was so simple but so good!! We thought the waiter was grumpy but once we started giving Italian a decent shot, he lightened up. He laughed when I tried to order a banana split so we became friends. He asked for my name and shook my hand but i forgot his. I asked him a few more words, but I don’t remember them! It’d be nice to know how to say nice to meet you. He gave us a little dessert each as a gift after we told him it was our first day in town. We tipped him 5 euros. We are not sure about tipping here. I read that they do 10% but the waiter and airport helper seemed surprised that we did that. After dinner, we wandered around and scoped out the area. It was fun to see such old buildings! Everything is beautiful and the streets are tiny! We got lost on the way back to the hotel, but we eventually made it. I wore new shoes that I thought were sensible, but gave me blisters. Here are some pics from our first day!
