We had another very full day yesterday. Our plan was to go to the colosseum in the morning, but we learned that the Italian holiday meant it wouldn’t open until 1:30 in the afternoon. We left the hotel around 9:30 and strolled across the river. We went in the pretty white church and then continued on to a nearby park. We just sat and relaxed in the sun for a few minutes. I wanted to get coffee so we did that next. I meant to order iced coffee with milk but I forgot the milk part and just got iced coffee. I still drank it, but it was very strong. We met a friendly stranger who realized we were American and started talking to us about Chicago, Florida, and his ex wife. He told us, “if you follow them, you will get lost.” I liked him. After coffee we came back to the hotel then headed out for lunch. We wanted to go to the pizza place Jen and I had a glass of wine at the night before, but we were hungry and couldn’t find it so we just stopped wherever. I ordered bruschetta and pizza in Italian. This waiter didn’t speak much English. I thought the pizza was very good. I like that Jen is open to trying new things with me. We got salami, ham, mushrooms and olives on it. After lunch, we jumped in a cab to go to the colosseum. It was so crazy. It was huge! The historical significance of the place was very much alive. It is preserved very well. We learned that a wooden floor used to cover where the jagged edges rise up today and slaves would hoist up men, animals and scenery changes. 10,000 animals and 11,000 men lost their lives there. It was really amazing. After a quick nap, we went out again for dinner. We went one street over from the hotel. The waitress didn’t speak much English, but the owner did. She was trying to help us pronounce the words correctly. I ordered pasta in a red sauce with bacon and peas. I loved it! Mom and Aunty Donna got pasta fagioli. Let me tell you, it was nothing like Olive Garden! My mom asked for cheese and the owner told her no. He didn’t want her to ruin his creation. He came over and talked to her about it later. It was a very enjoyable dinner. We went for gelato after that! I had a very rich chocolate fondant flavor. Maybe gelato is more for fruit flavors? I’m exhausted! Mom and I haven’t been able to fall asleep at night.
